Over a hundred years ago, renowned poet T. S. Eliot drew on a wealth of allusions, metaphors and imagery to create the timeless poem, 'Wasteland', lamenting the crisis of civilisation and the loss of traditional values. It is a groundbreaking work of twentieth-century Western modernist literature. Amsterdam Sinfonietta's artistic director, Candida Thompson, joins forces with choreographer Marco Gerris and Iranian composer Farokhzad Layegh to present an interdisciplinary performance that reinterprets the essence and imagery of 'Wasteland' through music, dance and aerial acrobatics.
The dancers and performers of Dutch ISH Dance Collective and Bandana Theatre Company challenge boundaries, freely tumbling and moving in all directions, turning walls into floors and steel frames into footholds. They hang upside down, fall, float, pull, entangle and struggle, incorporating contemporary and hip-hop dance to express the spiritual dimension of the poem through their bodies. The captivating acrobatics and choreography, together with the heart-stirring music, take the audience on an unforgettable journey through the wasteland, seeking hope in despair.
